Mujeres Bendecidas Group's story

Jackelin is thirty-five years old and the mother of six children. Five of them attend school. She has a sixth grade education and left school because she didn't like studying. Her husband supplies merchandise to convenience stores. For four years, Jackelin has been offering manicures by appointment from her home in the department/state of Huehuetenango. A year ago she started making piñatas, funeral wreaths and selling second-hand clothes. She advertises on social media and sells by custom order. She will use her third Kiva loan to buy piñata-making supplies, including glue, wire, and newspaper, because it's thin, absorbs well, and tears easily. Another portion of the loan is for manicure supplies including acrylic, small brushes, liquid glue and nail decorations. Her goals are to increase the size of her business and open her own store.

Jackelin is Secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Blessed Women” of seven of her friends in the group. They have convenience stores, tortilla shops and sales of fabrics, bedding, regional snacks, ceramic tableware and clothing. Since they have had little or no formal education, a monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program, is very useful for them. Recent topics have been about wise management practices and the dangers of lending one's name to someone else's business.
