Mujeres En Accion Group's story
Forty-one year old Glendy, a mother of five children who range in age from twelve to twenty-two, is married to a security guard who works on a banana farm. Her older children have high school educations and three of them are married. There are no grandchildren in the family. Glendy opened her convenience store six years ago at its own locale. She is sensitive to the needs of her customers and strives to keep her store well-stocked. This is why Glendy is requesting her second Kiva loan.
Glendy was elected President of her Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres en Accion” or “Women in Action” by six women who live in the Department of San Marcos. These women sell corn, regional meals, tamales or work in their convenience stores. They meet monthly, make loan payments and then participate in an educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Recent topics have been about health and family planning. Other topics are about women’s issues, family matters and business. The sessions are designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share the information. Education is key to empowerment, since many of these ladies are like Glendy, who only attended school for three years.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for partnering with Friendship Bridge to help Glendy and her friends help themselves. They are creating pathways toward a brighter future!!
