A loan helped a member to buy detergent and soap at the wholesale level.

Catalinas Group's story

Twenty-eight-year-old Sandy has an interesting history. She attended the university for two years, studying business administration.

Because she decided that her three children, who range in age from 3 to 7, needed her attention and love at home, she left her studies behind and placed her family as the highest priority. Her husband cares for a large “chalet” or luxurious house. For nine years, Sandy operated a tortilla shop or “tortilleria”, and then one year ago she began her laundry washing business. She has two employees, since business is increasing.

Sandy needs to buy more detergent and soap at the wholesale level. Her goal is to have a more formal laundry business, employ more women and buy a washing machine to clean large bedspreads and other large articles.

Seven Maya Kaqchikel women, who live in the department/state of Solola, participate in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training and bi-monthly health care services. They have beaded jewelry businesses, convenience stores and weaving businesses.

Sandy is the secretary of their Trust Bank called “Catalinas”. They look forward to their monthly meetings when they share support and then participate in an interactive educational training (health, family, women, business). They appreciate the availability of bi-monthly health care visits by a traveling nurse who offers all kinds of consults, exams and family planning.
