A loan helped an immigrant-owned catering business expand by buying an additional food truck.

Aryelis's story

Mr. Sweet is a family business that was founded in 1984 in Venezuela. In 2015, I made the decision with my family to come to the US in search of a better future for my children. At first, it was a bit difficult because I did not know anyone to guide me. I was in a new culture, with a new language and a very different system. I began to work in construction. Little by little, I was researching, and I registered the name of Mr. Sweet. I started with the idea of catering for events only part-time. I left the hard work of construction behind and set out to achieve my dream by working in H-E-B Grocery Store’s Bakery becoming a specialist cake decorator. At the same time, I connected with the GOYA company where I became part of its chef team to teach recipes.

While I carried out all these activities, I was developing my business by educating myself and achieving connections with the BakerRipley organization where I met my business coach Alexis Rios. Thanks to the training, I worked on a business plan. I planned to offer catering services with the aim of reaching my own business premises. Suddenly, the pandemic arrived, and I worried for a few days. Then, the situation triggered an idea that led me to purchase a Food Truck which is flourishing today. This business is the best way to connect my passions: love for my family and love for what I study in the world of nutrition and delectable pastries. It is my life’s calling to offer my clients the true delicacies of Mr. Sweet, and with 20 years of experience, it is something we know how to do very well.
