A loan helped to purchase a biodigester to improve her farm with sustainable technology.

Beatrice's story

Beatrice has 3 children and lives in Kericho. She works hard to produce quality vegetables and she also raises cows.

Currently, she finds herself spending excessive amounts on petroleum-based fertilizer, and the cost continues to increase. She also believes that the chemical fertilizer hurts the quality of her vegetables and worries about the impact of the chemicals on her local environment.

Beatrice wants to reduce her operating costs and sees her investment in a 8 cubic meter Sistema Biobolsa biodigester as an excellent opportunity. Using her biodigester, she will be able to turn the cows manure generated daily on her farm into bio-fertilizer and renewable energy. She'll feed the system with manure and through a process of anaerobic digestion, the organic waste will be transformed into methane-rich, renewable, potent organic fertilizer and bio-gas. The bio-fertilizer will be applied to her crops, improving both quality and yields without her having to spend more on petroleum-based agrochemical fertilizers. The bio-gas will replace the propane she currently uses to cook and to heat bathwater for her family.

This loan represents 64% of the full price of the biodigester, the remaining part was covered by a cash down payment and a government subsidy.

This loan is special because:

It saves farmers money by transforming waste into biogas and organic fertilizer.
